Slot Receiver

In the NFL, a slot receiver is a crucial part of any offense. They provide the quarterback with a versatile and reliable option when it comes to throwing the ball, but they also serve as an extra blocker on run plays outside the formation.

The role of a slot receiver is critical to a successful spread offense, as they allow the quarterback to stretch out the field and attack all three levels of the defense. They’re often used in pitch plays, reverses, and end-arounds.

Running Back and Blocker

While they’re typically matched against nickelbacks, safeties, and other linebackers in the run game, they still have to play a role as a blocker on certain runs designed to the outside of the field. Because they line up close to the center of the field, their initial blocking after the snap is more important than that of wideouts.

They’re also often called into pre-snap motion for pitch plays and reverses. This helps them get in position to make a catch before the ball is snapped, so they can be in the best possible spot when it does come time to run.
